Alan Solow Nominated to Chair Conference of Presidents
New York, December 19, 2008. Alan Solow has been nominated to be the next chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, announced Nominating Committee Chair James Tisch and Conference Acting Chair Harold Tanner. The nomination will be presented to the full Conference for consideration and approval at a General Meeting in early January.
I want to thank James Tisch for chairing the Nominating Committee and all of the committee members for the seriousness and thoughtfulness they brought to this important responsibility, said Mr. Tanner. This year the nominating committee was convened under special circumstances due to the passing of the Conferences Chair June Walker. The Committeewhich represents the broad spectrum of the membership of the Conferenceacted with diligence and integrity and we are grateful to them.
We had an unusual group of outstanding candidates, each with unique capabilities and qualities, Mr. Tisch said. The Conference and the American Jewish community can take pride in the quality of people ready to take on the mantle of leadership at this very difficult and challenging time. The Nominating Committee faced a daunting task and unanimously recommended Alan Solow, who has been involved for decades in Jewish communal affairs. We look forward to his leadership at this historic time in the United States, Israel and around the world, he added.
Mr. Solow is Chair of the Jewish Community Centers Association, Vice Chair of the World Confederation of Jewish Community Centers and a director for life of the Jewish Community Centers of Metropolitan Chicago. He was chair of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Chicago and has served in various leadership capacities in the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and Jewish United Fund. He is a member of the board of directors of the United Jewish Communities and of CLAL, the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, and serves on the Public Policy Committee of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society.
Mr. Solow is a member of the Aitz Hayim Center for Jewish Living in Highland Park, Illinois. A practicing attorney, Mr. Solow has been involved in civic affairs in Chicago as well as in national political endeavors.
