Conference of Presidents Welcomes UN Security Council Vote on Iran Sanctions

New York, June 9, 2010 … Leaders of the Conference of Presidents welcomed the vote today at the UN Security Council on the Iran sanctions resolution, with 12 voting for and only Turkey and Brazil voting against, with Lebanon abstaining.

Chairman Alan Solow and Executive Vice Chairman Malcolm Hoenlein said, “We are grateful for the role played by U.S. Ambassador Susan E. Rice and her colleagues assuring passage of the resolution.  Their work, together with other allies, secured passage of this resolution.  It is an important declaration putting Iran once again on notice that despite their efforts at subterfuge and delusion, the international community understands the danger Iran’s nuclear weapons program represents. While we would have liked to have seen a more inclusive resolution, with additional sanctions, we recognize that this can serve as a platform for additional measures by the so-called “Coalition of the Willing” including the U.S. and Europe.”

“We hope the leaders of Iran will take the message seriously and end their obfuscation, lies and diversions and meet the demands of the international community to stop the enrichment of uranium and other aspects of the nuclear weapons program.  Iran’s actions not only threaten the stability of the region but the entire world.  We do not want to see additional hardship on the people of Iran, who suffer under the denial of human rights and the extremist ideology of the regime,” Solow and Hoenlein said.

“Again, we express our appreciation to all those led by the U.S. Mission for their tireless and vital efforts that brought about this resolution.”
